The Philip Levine Prize in Poetry

2006 Levine Prize Winner announced

Anhinga Press is proud to co-sponsor the Philip Levine Prize in Poetry. Initiated by California State University, Fresno, the Levine Prize is an annual book contest, open to all poets (except current or former students or faculty of CSU/Fresno); it currently offers a $1,500 prize, publication, and distribution by Anhinga Press. The winning poet also receives 25 free author copies of the book.

In its inaugural year (2001), the contest's final judge was Philip Levine himself. Levine, who taught at California State University, Fresno for many years, is one of the best known and most highly-honored of all living American poets. He has published more than 17 books of poems, as well as several volumes of translations, essays, and a memoir. His list of honors includes two National Book Awards, two National Book Critics Circle Awards, the American Book Award, the Ruth Lily Poetry Prize for Distinguished Poetic Achievement, and the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

Details about the 2007 contest will be posted here when they become available.
